Adding to his expertise, he is taking a dental sleep course at Tufts University so that he can treat patients with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a dangerous, potentially fatal sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts. Treatment for sleep apnea has traditionally been a CPAP machine, which involves a face mask and a hose. It is a cumbersome device that many people do not want to wear. "50% of people who receive CPAP machines are non-complaint," says Dr. Gallagher. He will be able to treat patients' sleep apnea with a much more manageable mouthpiece called a mandibular advancement appliance. It keeps the airway open by moving the lower jaw forward.
