31 TheSouthShoreMagazine.com such a successful artist is not, however, her past a c h i e v e m e n t s but her constant involvement in the craft of music. Although her days grinding out shows on the road may be behind her, Les is perhaps more involved in music than ever. Her studio Norwell Voice and Music Studio allows students to learn voice, ukulele, piano, songwriting and more: all first- hand from one of the industry's most respected veterans. Les also continues to honor the tradition of roots music by performing country blues sets at local clubs. Perhaps the biggest testament to Les's talents as a musician is her ability to shift seamlessly between genres with no integrity lost. One of Les's most recent projects is The Dirty Martinis Jazz Band, where she sings songs ranging from original compositions, standards and songs from the American Songbook. The Dirty Martinis can be found performing frequently at venues like Tosca in Hingham and is set to play several dates at Hull's HK Too when the weather turns nice. I highly recommend that any music fan who isn't aware of Les Sampou look her up and dive into her lengthy and diverse body of work. Pay her a visit at www. LesSampou.com. You won't be disappointed! Last but not least for this edition of The Beat, I'd like to talk about a young and upcoming artist: Noelle Micarelli. In my opinion, Micarelli from Hingham has one of the most unique and brilliant sounds to emerge from The South Shore—and from greater New England. In her early twenties, Noelle already has a uniquely defined sound. Her broad musicality is clearly evident as she displays influences ranging from classical to world to folk to pop. Her arrangements are beautiful and interesting while remaining completely palatable to the listener. Her offbeat topics offer a youthful playfulness filled with wisdom beyond her years. Infuse these topics with distinct phrasing and melodic choices, and Noelle's music will not only make you think but tickle your ears and imagination, as well. A great example of this can be found in her song "Comic Book Girl" from her 2017 release "Field Notes from Another Place." Noelle's most recent release (a double single) from 2018 introduces many of the same musical and intellectual sentiments with a fuller and more commercial-ready sound. "Colin Farrell's Eye" makes you feel as though you are on an adventure through a foreign land, perhaps somewhere deep in South America. "Would you like to dance with me under the light of a movie screen the size of Rhode Island?/ You can meet me on the corner of Colin Farrell's Eye/ We can throw our popcorn in the air when someone dies/ Back then I didn't know you." It's this type of writing that allows the listener to completely surrender to their own imagination. " C o m p l i c a t e d S p o o n " o f f e r s more of Micarelli's introspective and playful whimsy: "It must be tough to eat your breakfast with that complicated spoon/ Do you mind at all if I do?" A truly gifted artist, I predict Micarelli has a fruitful career ahead of her. Give her a listen at www.NoelleMicarelli.com and stay hip to the sound of this gifted young artist.
