Sacred Heart School recently completed a brand-new speech and debate center, complete with stage and screening that brings their practice to life and prepares students to compete. The Secondary School offers eleven on-site Advanced Placement courses in six different disciplines. In addition to the core curricula, students can chose from numerous elective options such as broadcast journalism, mock trial, art history, foreign policy, psychology and marine science. The Secondary School recently built a one million dollar Science and Innovation Center that houses state-of-the art labs for biology, physics, earth and space science and physical science. Sacred Heart School's leading edge facilities and small student- teacher ratio allow for individualized learning and hands-on projects that are nothing short of extraordinary. Under the direction of Clair Lombardo, Chair of the Science Department, students from the elementary and secondary schools recently helped to prepare a mini-boat research vessel named "Sacred Heart Star of the Sea." Once completed, it was transported to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and then air freighted to South Africa. Currently, Star of the Sea is in the Indian Ocean being used by a team of scientists to help them perform research on the ocean floor and slow-spreading ridges. In addition to cultivating its students' intellectual growth, Sacred Heart School also calls for its students to actively live their faith and dedicate themselves to service. Its mission compels them to develop a keen respect for the dignity of all persons and answer calls to action. Students participate in a wide range of community activities and service projects such as serving food for the homeless at Matthew's Kitchen, volunteering at Providence House and performing beach clean-ups and other environmental projects. Sacred Heart School's biology laboratory also includes a working greenhouse in which students establish hundreds of organic seedlings for community initiatives, including Healthy Plymouth and Terra Cura, a nonprofit that transforms land development to advance the health of communities. Sacred Heart School students can explore their interests in a variety of ways though sports and other extracurricular activities. The students put on an art show called "Through the Looking Class" at the Kingston Public Library each year, in addition to another art show on the beautiful campus grounds. Their performing arts program encourages artistry through music and theatre. Students produce their own newspaper, as well as an annual literary magazine called Lingua Franca. From Astronomy Club, with an on-campus observatory, to Chess Club, Amnesty International to Drama Club, the opportunities for self-expression are numerous. Sports are another proud tradition for Sacred Heart School Kingston, Home of the Fighting Saints. Volleyball, football, swimming and golf are just some of the athletics available to its students. Athletes compete and train in the student athletic center, which has a modern gymnasium that includes a well-equipped fitness center and team room. There are also tennis courts, a track and well-maintained baseball, softball, soccer, football and lacrosse fields. Sacred Heart also has an exceptional on-campus cross country wooded trail. The campus' gorgeous fields, trails and gardens are the site of many student activities. At Sacred Heart School Kingston, character and moral values are taught by example in a climate that is supportive, caring and just. It encourages students to become more aware of their relationship to God and others, to develop their talents and abilities and to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations in the church and world communities. The school builds self-confidence and an appreciation of each person's abilities and accomplishments in a partnership of mutual respect.
