16 SSM: Who inspires you? SR: The landscape architects we work with are not only creative, but also challenge us. They inspire us every day to develop innovative solutions to maximize the natural elements of every landscape we tackle. We are experts at dealing with complex site topography such as coastal areas with challenging terrain, severe grade changes and ledge. We are continually challenged with sourcing the highest quality materials for all our projects. I'm also inspired by our clients who motivate us to deliver top- notch results on complex projects, which is incredibly rewarding. SSM: What new trends do you see? SR: Creating indoor style living rooms in outdoor spaces is increasingly popular. Despite the weather, outdoor kitchens and grill stations, fire pits, fireplaces and heat lamps mean that outdoor entertaining can be enjoyed year-round. Technology such as outdoor TVs, sound systems and ambient lighting is being incorporated into outdoor rooms, giving homeowners another reason to gather outside. Garden containers of all sizes, with interesting foliage, textures and seasonal plantings, are great ways to create inviting and intimate spaces in patio or terrace areas. Pools are becoming even more desirable, as well as play and sport courts for both kids and adults. It brings a whole new level of entertainment and fitness to have a basketball, tennis or multi- sport court right outside your door. SSM: What materials do you enjoy working with the most? SR: Some of our most exciting features in the garden are hardscapes. Pavers, natural stone, and pebbles allow for a variety of aesthetics and require minimal maintenance. Stone walls are an appealing staple in traditional New England design. We also enjoy getting creative with water and fire features, which provide endless possibilities.
