Vertigo's scary sensations of spinning, nausea, loss of balance and disorientation can be caused by dislodged crystals in the ear. Called benign paroxysmal position vertigo (BPPV), it can be remedied with balance retraining, sensory techniques and physical maneuvering. "We perform techniques where we move your head so that the crystals get repositioned to where they belong. The exercises also retrain the brain and nerves to know which way is up," says Julie. Hingham Physical Therapy treats people of all ages who are recovering from surgery, are sidelined from sports due to injuries or have a condition that came on gradually. "Often, people are better at taking care of others than at taking care of themselves," says Julie. "They brush off pain and discomfort until it becomes bad enough to disrupt their lives." Years of sports and training can create conditions such as tennis elbow or shin splints. Work conditions also create issues; Hingham Physical Therapy often treats neck and back pain caused by long commutes, physical labor and hours spent at desks or staring at technology. Having provided individualized, in-person care for over 16 years, Hingham Physical Therapy found themselves in unchartered terrain during the coronavirus lockdown. It adapted by reaching out to each patient and providing appointments via Telehealth. "Our job involves techniques where we are hands on with our patients and, of course, we could not do that with Telehealth. Our therapists quickly found ways to get the most out of every treatment by working not only with the patient, but also with family members and caregivers who could help contribute to their recovery. Many people who come to us have just had surgery; we needed to make sure they didn't fall through the cracks." All clinics are open again, and the practice has changed protocol in order to ensure everyone's safety. New COVID-19 precautions include taking patients' temperatures, having patients fill out a questionnaire, and asking questions about travel and COVID-19 exposure as outlined by the CDC. Hingham Physical Therapy requires everyone to wear masks at all times, has cleaning stations throughout the clinic, and has gloves and masks available. Patients are escorted to their treatment area to avoid congregation in the waiting room, and most paperwork and scheduling is done by phone. The clinics have been reorganized to allow for social distancing during treatments, and they are currently investing in curtains to allow for another barrier of protection. "Kris and I, and our whole staff, are thrilled that the clinics are open again and we are doing what we love: providing top-notch physical therapy and rehabilitation," says Julie. "We want our patients to get the care they deserve in an environment where they can feel confident and safe."
