The Cape Cod Cafe in Brockton has been owned by the Jamoulis family since 1947, when E. James Jamoulis bought it after returning from the war. Today, its owners are his grandsons, Jonathan and Jeremy, it has expanded to four locations and its bar pizza is still a legendary favorite. Bar pizza is a South Shore creation that began in the 1930s as something to eat at the bars in Brockton. "It has only recently been given the name 'bar pizza,' because here on the South Shore it's just pizza," says Jonathan. "I'm glad that it has been given a name, because that means other regions are catching onto the specialty we have here." South Shore bar pizza uses cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella, and the dough is pressed into a ten-inch round pan. While many bars served them, E. James formulated the special recipe that Cape Cod Cafe still uses today. When Jonathan' parents, Jim and Lynn, took over the business from E. James in the 1970s, they renovated the Cape Cod Cafe, making it more of a family restaurant with seating for 200. They also opened satellite locations in Raynham, Bridgewater and Halifax. Cape Cod Cafe's pizza has remained consistent over the decades, and the mouthwatering flavor is impossible to replicate: its pans and ovens are seasoned, some having been used for over 40 years.
