8 For many years, the town of Hingham worked to secure a partnership that would help develop the harbor shoreline, with one of the biggest aspects of the vision being the addition of a shack stand where beach goers, residents and other harbor visitors could grab a quick bite while enjoying the area. In September of 2020, the vision finally came to life with the opening of Beach House, a shack stand and takeout window nestled in Hingham Harbor, right at the bathing beach. The project faced countless hurdles since it began, so its success is something the town and the operators can truly be proud of. The first shack stand concept was introduced as part of a development plan back in 2007 that included a variety of additions aimed at increasing harbor activity, like a pedestrian bridge, harbor walk and snack stand, some of which have now come to fruition. After a few failed attempts, the town was fortunate enough to receive a nearly three-quarters-of-a-million-dollar grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, essentially covering half the cost of the engineering and build-out. This grant opened the door for another potential local business partner to team up with Hingham and bring the building to life! Even the design was not without complications, as not only is the area in a flood zone, but the location is part of a historic district with many strict compliance guidelines. Luckily, the team at Strekalovsky Architecture was able to create a unique design that met all the necessary safety and historical needs, resulting in a stunning building. Beach House is a summer shack-style takeout restaurant, public restroom and a community room. The project also created 200 parking spaces for beach goers and visitors. Beach House first opened its doors for a few weeks back in September of 2020, testing its beach menu of ice cream, lobster rolls, burgers and other similar fare. In 2021, rain made for a difficult summer, but ultimately led to a successful first "true" season. The addition of online ordering and a social media presence dramatically increased popularity for this unique spot which is quickly becoming a summer favorite for lunch and dinner.
