20 At The Arc of the South Shore, people matter. This sentiment is evident from the moment you walk in the door and interact with their committed and engaged team. From the individuals served to the superhero employees who work closely with these individuals and their families, The Arc provides a critical network of support for one of our most vulnerable populations. For over seventy years, The Arc has served thousands of families across the South Shore, providing the highest quality services and advocacy for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities including autism. The organization was formed by a group of parents who came together to address the needs of their children and create a support network Today, there are eighteen Arc locations, with The Arc of Massachusetts being the lead chapter. It advocates on state and federal levels and ensures that our elected officials understand the needs of the people it serves. The Arc provides a wide range of programs, supporting individuals throughout their lives. One such program focuses on early intervention, serving children ages three and younger and helping families build a strong foundation by providing tools, resources and support from an early age. As individuals age out of the school system, Adult Foster Care and Personal Care Attendant programs, as well as Community-Based Day Services, are available. There are many families who live in fear of what will happen to their loved ones when they become unable to provide care for them. The Arc is here to provide support and assistance to those families, allowing them to have peace of mind. The Arc's programs address all ranges of needs, including individuals with complex medical needs through therapeutic Day Habilitation Services. For others, vital programs help improve independence through skills development, including fitness and exercise programs, cooking and even motor skills development. Community integration is one of the organization's core goals for those they serve. They provide career services and training to help individuals secure jobs or volunteer positions within the community.
