8 with critical support from a community who truly embraced the idea, they broke ground on Friendship Home in 2009. Since its launch, Friendship Home has carried out its mission to enrich the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families by providing quality respite care and support services in a safe and caring environment. For many families, this need becomes more evident than ever as they navigate the difficult and abrupt transition from the daily routines offered by the school system to the severe lack of much-needed programs, resources and support for adults. PROGRAMS AT FRIENDSHIP HOME Today, Friendship Home provides critical programs and services to individuals with developmental disabilities on the South Shore. The Home Away from Home respite center provides overnight stays for adults ages 18 and older. In this comfortable, home-like setting, guests experience independent living while spending time with friends and participating in activities. Families can rest assured that their loved ones are enjoying this respite and experiencing independence in a safe, supportive environment. "For our participants, their stay in our respite program is an opportunity for them to be with their friends in a warm and welcoming environment. They are having fun and building skills to support their independence," explains President and Executive Director Andrea Pyke. "For their caregivers, it allows time for them to focus on other priorities or just have a break." The Bridges to Work program helps Friendship Home participants explore career paths, set goals and learn the necessary skills to be successful. Thanks in major part to the commitment from local businesses, Friendship Home's employment partners provide opportunities for members to work, earn money and fully participate in the community in a meaningful and dignified way.
