22 Since 1988, Road to Responsibility, Inc. has been Making Lives Better for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities along the South Shore and throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. With a mission to provide the means, opportunity and support that allow those they serve to take their place as productive members of the community, Road to Responsibility, Inc. (RTR), has helped enrich the lives of thousands of individuals and families, operating 49 residences, co-operative and supportive living apartments and nine day-service locations which promote education, employment and community participation. For parents of children with I/DD, the prospect of finding critical services for their child once they age out of the school system at age 22 can be overwhelming. RTR's Community Based Day Support (CBDS) services can provide these young individuals, as well as older adults, with crucial resources and support to help them get out into society, explore employment opportunities and take other steps toward independence. CBDS services provide structure and daily routine while promoting participation in both employment-related and recreational activities within the service centers and out in the community. Programs aim to help individuals work to their highest capacity, adopt a healthy lifestyle and form meaningful relationships. Through resume assistance, mock interviews and workplace activities, participants obtain employment opportunities. With food education and exercise, as well as positive behavior support, participants are taught critical techniques to help enhance both physical and mental health. RTR offers residential, employment, day habilitation and community- based day support services to a diverse spectrum of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including those with significant medical and behavioral challenges. Utilizing an integrated clinical behavioral approach, members who have previously failed with other organizations find success with RTR. RTR serves members from over 100 different cities and towns, making an impact throughout the state! This year, RTR is saying goodbye to one of the organizations most integral leaders --- Dr. Sue Powers, who has retired from her position as Chief Operating Officer. For more than four decades, Sue's keen mind and passion for helping others led her to develop some of the state's most successful and innovative programs for people with complex needs, which served as national models during her tenure at RTR. These accomplishments and her broad acumen in the field earned her the respect of state leaders, other agencies and many healthcare providers over the years.
