20 For so many adults with IDD and/or autism, independent living has never been an option. They have always relied on family for care and support with few choices for them to make for themselves. "I believe that everybody should have the right to choose where they live and who they live with." By providing them with the tools they need, this population gains independence and experiences accomplishment and inclusion while alleviating stress and pressure on families who never want their loved one to feel like a burden. These families can rest assured that their adult child now has the tools and path forward toward a safe and fulfilling life. After all, isn't that what everyone wants for their child? Motivated by love and the extensive understanding of the need, the SAIL Home team set out to learn exactly what it would take to bring this type of critical housing to the South Shore. Their training with the Center for Independent Futures provided them with a roadmap to bring this housing concept to life. Completing their training in July 2023, the team hopes to launch SAIL Home Scituate by the end of 2025. That is an incredibly fast turnaround which they are extremely proud of and hope inspires other likeminded parent groups. This is something that can be a reality in communities everywhere. The need is there, so SAIL Home wants to help other families by providing the resources needed to expand their own toolboxes. "My passion to find solutions for this population is my purpose," says Henry who encourages others to replicate what they are doing in Scituate. "You, too, can do it. We will help, train and support you." In April, the Town of Scituate provided $1 million of CPC funds to SAIL Home, helping to fast-track the opening of the home. As a nonprofit, this is really a community-driven project. The need for investors and stakeholders is immense and goes a long way to helping even more families. Most importantly, these homes will be affordable, providing a sustainable housing solution to residents. In addition to independent housing, SAIL Home can help families find assistive technologies which could help with daily living right in their own current homes. SAIL Home welcomes inquiries from parents and caregivers who need guidance, as well as volunteers and investors who are willing to donate services or funding. Right now, their goal is to raise $5 million through their Capital Campaign. This assists with the launch of SAIL Home Scituate (estimated to cost $3 million). It will also create an endowment to support the mission of offering resources and training to families, enabling them to create supported housing options for their loved ones for the long term. With your help, a difference can be made in the lives of individuals and their families, providing them with the resources they need to thrive and succeed. As of April 2024, they have secured $1,310,000 towards this goal. Learn more at sailhomes.org. - Marynell Henry, SAIL Home Executive Director - Marynell Henry, SAIL Home Executive Director
