explore foreign languages, opening new avenues for mental engagement. Family member Jeff Helm notes, "We see a positive impact when residents engage in language learning. The program creates connections between learners and offers something new and exciting." This structured, curriculum-based approach to language learning provides both mental stimulation and the opportunity for residents to explore new cultures. HOW TRANSFORMATIVE PROGRAMMING CAN RECONNECT FAMILIES The transformation at memory care residences like The Cordwainer extends far beyond the residents themselves. Dementia caregiving can become all-consuming for families, leading to emotional burnout, stress and strained relationships. For many families, placing a loved one in memory care is a painful decision, often accompanied by guilt and anxiety. But the specialized programming at The Cordwainer seeks to ease this burden. Taking over the caregiving role allows families to shift their focus back to their relationship with their loved ones. "Our relationship has shifted back to what it once was. Instead of constantly worrying if I'm doing enough, I can just enjoy spending time with my mom again," says one family member. At The Cordwainer, residents are not simply passive listeners; they actively engage with music by singing, playing instruments and learning about musical theory. This deeper interaction helps to stimulate cognitive functions and bring joy. Art is another critical component. The creative process allows residents to express themselves when words fail, fostering a sense of accomplishment. A former Ivy League scholar, now a resident, has discovered an unexpected joy in art. His wife shared, "He was proud of his art projects. He never saw himself as an artist, but now he has a routine and is entertained. We are happy about that." Language learning offers additional cognitive stimulation. In partnership with Scotland-based non-profit, Lingo Flamingo, a language-learning program tailored for dementia care, residents 9 TheSouthShoreMagazine.com
