The sense of guilt can often lead families to do everything in their power to keep their loved one at home, believing the familiarity of home or living with family is best. "But true love means always thriving to find the best solution for the one you love," says Bodo. Studies show that social contact and interaction is often the best therapy for memory care. Talking, playing, laughing, sharing meals, feeling togetherness, being inspired, all this works in a lively community but often not at home where the world may be limited. That is why every detail at The Cordwainer— from the team and programming to building design and interior layout—aims to inspire senses of connection and meaning, while providing comfort and purpose. With a staff of more than 80 providing support and care 24/7, residents are safe, secure and engaged, all while feeling connected to the world and community around them. Regardless of cognitive challenges, every person still has a story worth living. The team at The Cordwainer embodies the dedication and commitment to be part of helping them to continue that story. "When a 90-year-old fulfills a lifelong dream, when someone rediscovers their voice…," remarks Tamilyn, "these moments tell us we're doing something that transcends traditional care." "This is The Cordwainer's remarkable story," explains Bodo. "Proof that memory loss doesn't mean the end of growth, joy or purpose." Through thoughtful and immersive programming, off-site excursions, and careful attention to every detail of day-to-day life, residents stay connected to the community and experiences they've always valued. They are engaged and find real meaning and purpose based on their own preferences and choices. The team meets them where they are and provides care and programming that works for all levels of need and ability. Follow The Cordwainer on Facebook and on Instagram @cordwainer.memory.care for a glimpse at the activities and programs that are helping residents live their best lives—from holiday performances to bucket list excursions and so much more. Visit cordwainermemorycare.com to schedule a visit and experience the unmatched energy and comradery of the staff, residents and families at The Cordwainer. featuring songs and instrumental performances," shares Tamilyn. Weekly rehearsals brought the community together as residents relearned beloved carols, mastered new instruments, and built toward opening day. One resident took on the challenge of learning "The First Noel" on the xylophone specifically for the show, practicing the melody until he could perform it practically solo with confidence. The afternoon showcased not just musical talent, but something deeper: proof that dementia doesn't diminish the capacity for growth, achievement, and the pure joy of creating something beautiful together. WALKING WITH PURPOSE "Despite their diagnosis, our residents want to contribute and make an impact," says Tamilyn. Each year, residents at The Cordwainer eagerly participate in an internal walk called "Walk With Me" to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. "Participating in Walk With Me is not only a fun day but it gives people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia a chance to contribute to the search for a cure, maintaining their sense of purpose and agency," says Bodo. "There is this vibe you cannot describe but you definitely feel." Family participation—not born from obligation, but sheer joy and interest in new experiences with their loved one— alongside the deep connections forged between the team and each resident, has helped The Cordwainer create the blueprint for "reimagined" memory care. A community full of purpose, meaning and possibility.
