Running a family business is hard work. Marsh's Wine & Spirits is not different than most family run businesses. They have 3 generations proudly involved in running their landmark wine and spirits store on Route 53 in Norwell. Stephen Marsh's dad, an icon at Marsh's for decades, is still involved but has scaled back his time in recent years. Stephen's wife, Laurie, is working at the store frequently, and when not in school and when extra sets of hands are needed you're likely to see Stephen and Laurie's children, Leah and Carson. With hard work comes the necessity of getting away as a family, so this summer the Marsh's combined some business and pleasure with a trip to California to Napa Valley and the surrounding areas. Market research and visiting the various vineyards that produce some of the hundreds of wines that are carried at Marsh's Wine & Spirits is an extremely important detail to Stephen so he can educate himself, his staff and customers on the virtues of the many, many different varietals and brands carried at the store. As many of you know Napa Valley California is the epicenter for all things wine in the United States with multiple, worldwide awardwinning wines produced by the Vintners of this world renowned region. There is a large wood carved sign welcoming visitors to the Napa Valley with an attached sign "….. and the wine is bottled poetry." Robert Louis Stevenson. During the trip to Napa Valley, the Marsh's were able to see and visit many wineries in the valley, specifically focusing on the Stags Leap District. "The Stag's Leap District comprises of 18 winegrowers and Vintners whose mission is to work together to grow the reputation of the appellation and it's wines and share it's quality with the wine loving world." Some of the stops on the Marsh's tour included Silver Oak, Schramsberg-J.Davies, Black Stallion, Caymus and ZD Wines. However the main event was their trip to CLOS DU VAL WINERY. Upon visiting the Clos Du Val Website (www.closduval.com) I was intrigued by their mission and visions. The mission is being "VINDEPENDENT." This is simply stated, "that Clos Du Val remains proudly defiant of passing trends and influences, steadfast to our commitment to crafting refined wines of elegance and balance, reflective not of 'winemaker magic,' but rather as a fluent expression of the varietal and the territory to which our wines are born." An artist's depiction of the three mischievous daughters of Zeus: Splendor, Mirth and Joy is what graces the label of Clos Du Val wines. This trio was known throughout ancient Greece for dancing, singing and being the life of Olympian parties. Independent in mind, body and spirit are these essential virtues and best represent what Clos Du Val embodies. Clos Du Val has four core varietals with their Cabernet's being the best known, however Stephen was fortunate enough to experience the newest addition to the Clos Du Val family: Clos Du Val Savignon Blanc. This is being offered at Marsh's immediately! Other Clos du Val wines that you can find at Marsh's Wine & Spirits are the 2010 Clos Du Val Chardonnay at $19.99, 2010 Clos Du Val Cabernet Savignon at $24.99 and the 2008 Clos Du Val Cabernet Savignon at $60.00.
