43 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 of super beer, check. These guys are brewing gold in a glass; I suggest sampling Zoe, a hoppy American amber ale at 7.2%, included in their 4-beer sampler tray. MBC is a destination spot for beer lovers and environmentalists alike: they donate 1% of their profits to the planet, do what's right. WOODSTOCK INN AND BREWERY, NORTH WOODSTOCK NH A 2.5 hour trip from the Boston area-this special place is worth the day and the night. Be sure to take your time on the way up, check in to one of their many cottages and dine in their brewery. Let me stress this is not pub food, but a high-grade selection of American fare suited for any guest, all paired with any one of their year round, seasonal and specialty draft offerings. The accommodations appear rustic but are modernized and welcome after a serious day on the slopes. Hospitality is the name of the game here in NH: breakfast included with your room stay, simply stroll down to the main building which houses the brewery, order a coffee and any food with the name "benedict" in it. Woodstock Inn is truly special place that you will visit more than once in your lifetime. A favorite of mine is their flagship "pigs ear brown ale" a perfect toasty, chocolaty offering that is welcomed after a day of touring the local land. GREAT ADIRONDACK BREWERY, LAKE PLACID NY Lake Placid should be seen by every single American at some point in their lives. This small upstate NY town is teeming with Olympic history and the locals are happy to chat about it. Pony up to any bar on Main Street, "Zig Zags," "Blue Delta," or "The Dancing Bear" and soak in the Olympic greatness that has passed through their doors. A small brewery is on the same street, try to wrangle their winter seasonal "Whiteface Stout" named after the steep Olympic mountain, the tallest in the northeast region. PORTSMOUTH BREWERY, PORTSMOUTH NH Take a seat at the bar and order yourself a tall glass of dirty blonde ale. Historic downtown Portsmouth has had its ups and downs throughout the years and now is most definitely on the up and up, tough to find a parking spot during the popular dinner time rush. The food in this area is truly impressive, with the staff at PB notwithstanding. ZERO GRAVITY BREWING, BURLINGTON VT Truthfully, the entire city of Burlington is worth the trip but for this article I had to pick one. This brewery is located inside American Flatbread Co, serving 14 rotating drafts of really interesting styles from gruits to Belgian saisons to Baltic porters. Oh, the pizza is pretty good too. A huge clay brick domed oven cranks out flatbread pizzas from lunch till the wee hours offering numerous styles to choose from. The beer…what can I say, the freshest you'll ever drink is at a brewpub hands down. They offer 8oz and 16oz sizes encouraging the customer to experiment a new beer each visit. COASTAL ExTREME BREWING, NEWPORT RI Heading to Rhody this summer? I thought you'd say yes. Take a visit to Coastal Extreme Brewing, brewers of Newport Storm ales and distillers of Thomas Tew Spirits. The liquor side of the brewery focuses on the sought after past time that literally ran downtown Newport, rum. Visit Derek, the head brewer and he'll bring you through their year round and seasonal offering. Try an ounce or so of their rum, finished in French oak barrels with black strap molasses and you'll be sure to grab a bottle before you leave the state. CAMBRIDGE BREWING CO, CAMBRIDGE MA Find the red line subway and take it to Kenmore Square drink beer from the number one brew pub in America, easy right? This iconic brewery has been in the business of crafting mind blowing beers since 1989 under the trust of owner Phil Bannatyne and Brew master Will Meyers. This brewpub churns out beer styles of all shapes and sizes. At any given time of the year Will may emerge with a keg from his notorious cellar below the building and showcase a barrel-fermented sour wild ale, a Belgian style dubbel or a 5 year old barleywine called "blunderbuss." This brewery also has a serious cask beer program which allows the beer to naturally ferment and carbonate inside the vessel (cask) and to be poured at cellar temp in the 55 degree range at the bar. The key here is their "beerunch" menu, served Saturdays and Sundays from 11am till 4pm. This pairs up crazy breakfast food, often with my favorite Vermont maple syrup mixed into some offering, add their Charles River Porter and we have ourselves the cure to a weekend hangover, you're welcome. I hope I've been of assistance to your adventurous beer side. These are some of my favorite spots to hit, all just a couple hours from central MA. We have learned the freshest beer comes from the brewery itself, which in this case is often a brewpub offering food to their customers. Visit one of these breweries this weekend, you will be satisfied. Life is hard, beer is easy. Cheers! : TheSouthShoreMagazine.com
