TheSouthShoreMagazine.com 25 An example of this success has been Amanda. After many years of working in one of our employment centers, Amanda was longing for a job in the community. She was teamed up with an employment specialist from our Job Placement department and started actively looking for employment. Through the help of our Cobblestone Farm located in Marshfield, Amanda was able to start the process of working outside of the employment center and began learning the skills that were needed to land a competitive job in the community. All of her hard work has paid off and Amanda is going on her second year of working in the community. Amanda's story is the same as many. Programs like Cobblestone Farm and our Ocean Village Enrichment Center located in Marshfield provide job training and serve as a stage for our individuals to gain the confidence that is needed to find meaningful employment. This community involvement does not just stop in our Employment department; with both of our Residential and Day Habilitation departments also working to become active in the community. Most have heard of the local program Meals on Wheels, but did you know that teams from 5 of our programs actually go out and deliver meals to elderly members of their community? This volunteering is important for all that participate. Each individual raves about their time on the road delivering meals, and it is amazing seeing how each feels a sense of accomplishment because they are able to help others. It is also not just about working and volunteering that get one out in the community. Many of our individuals are out living a meaningful life out doing the same things we do every day. Many of us in the community live and die by our sports teams in New England and this has never been more true than in the case of Sheila. A die-hard fan of all of New England teams, Sheila can be seen at many sporting events throughout the year loudly cheering for her teams. This year Sheila was given the great honor of participating in a pregame ceremony at a Red Sox game. Enjoying every moment of walking through the great halls of historic Fenway Park, and then walking onto the same field where her team had won the World Series a few months earlier proved to be the precursor for what came next; funneling through the speakers the announcer called her name as she stood at home plate and the Fenway faithful cheered for her. Never shy in a situation, Sheila took the opportunity to not just to bask in the cheering but to yell to Wally the mascot to come over. Sheila grabbed her favorite person involved with the team and gave him a huge bear hug while the cheering only got louder when the fans saw what she was doing. Even with all of the success of those like Amanda and Shelia there is a need to do better. Many new initiatives are starting to be developed and rolled out to better suit the changing needs of the individuals we serve. Each initiative is person centered and will help the individual grow as person and a productive member of the community they reside in. To learn more please visit roadtoresponsibilty.org.
