The first big snowfall! At least 28 inches! We already had snow on the ground, so we have about three feet! Shoveled a square out the back door so the puppy can go potty. The kids are psyched to have two snow days in a row. We built a wall of snow against the house so the kids can sled. Backyard looks like a Robert Frost poem. Peaceful. Beautiful icicles all over house. Neighbor came by with a beer and a snow blower to help us dig out. Definitely made hot chocolate when we all went in! WINTER STORM LINUS. FEBRUARY 2, 2015 Another storm. 18 more inches. The kids are sledding down the garage roof. Puppy keeps peeing in house because snow too high. Car got stuck in a snow drift in our own driveway. Neighbors tried to help push us out, but it was no use. Had to call tow truck. I can't focus on my work. Have snow blindness yet I'm inside. Two more snow days, so kids home yet another four days straight. Why don't they ever stop talking to me? WINTER STORM MARCUS. FEBRUARY 9, 2015 7:30 am I've been literally snowed in for the past two days. No wine. So much snow. I can't lift the shovel. Husband is out of town for the next five days. Can't find neighbors. No wine. Is this snow day 6 or 7? 12? The kids are in the basement listening to flamenco music. Why? 1:00 pm Solved flamenco music mystery: kids teaching selves to tango. Of course. They invited me into basement to watch their performance and I discovered brown water is leaking down the walls. Googled it. Those icicles are causing the leaks. I do not understand how in the hell icicles are making my walls bleed like the Overlook Hotel. The leaks are strategically placed over the television and electric wiring. Tried hiring someone to clear my roof but everyone is booked until March. Ripping up towels to stuff in cracks. 4:30 pm Crouching in my garage using a garden trowel to pour calcium chloride into pantyhose as a roof-melt. Not sure what calcium chloride is. Wearing two layers of dish gloves. Does it burn your skin? Or is that hydrochloric acid? Screw you, chemistry. 5:00 pm Wishing real hard did not make the leaking stop. Wine did not appear either. Borrowed something called a roof rake. It's longer than the proverbial ten foot pole you won't touch crap with. Supposed to wield it over my head like a Scottish highlander and pull snow off my roof. I cannot physically budge it because I have the upper body strength of a consumptive kitten. Called my older daughters outside to help me. Little one couldn't come because puppy peed on her snowsuit. Tried to use girls' body weight by let it snow, let it snow, let it snow... ...wait a minute. by Erica Ford Sweeney TheSouthShoreMagazine.com 27
