Although it is something that has been slowly evolving, seeing a specialist is now far more common than it was in the past," said Duffy. When I asked her why she thought that was the case, she replied that, while in general, veterinary medicine may still lag behind human medicine in a number of areas, certain things are starting to change. The emergency care that can be provided in a full service hospital is so much better now. In the field of emergency and critical care, everyone collaborates and works together. The veterinary specialists work very closely with the ER doctors. In fact, one of the main reasons Dr. Duffy chose her field as a veterinary criticalist is that she gets to see so many different types of cases, from neurology to cardiology to trauma. We all want what is best for our pets, and we must be realistic in knowing that emergencies exist. Whenever you bring your pet to the VCA South Shore Animal Hospital for emergency care, your pet will receive care from a team of doctors and technicians who have received intensive, additional training in treating life- threatening conditions. From traumatic injuries, to respiratory emergencies, to neurologic emergencies or animals in need of a blood transfusion, the ER Service at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital is fully equipped to handle any situation. While your primary care veterinarian is able to diagnose and treat numerous health problems and handle various routine surgeries, certain situations may arise that require the care of a veterinary specialist who specializes in caring for animals in emergency and critical situations. You can be assured that the emergency service veterinarians, critical care specialists and other specialists on the staff at the VCA South Shore Animal Hospital will work as a team in support of your primary care veterinarian on a referral basis until the emergency situation is resolved. If your veterinarian does not handle after-hours emergencies, then there is a strong possibility that they already have a referral relationship in place with the VCA South Shore Animal Hospital. Emergency patients are seen at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To schedule an appointment with a specialist, please call 781-337-6622. Although patients are seen on an appointment basis Monday – Friday from 7am – 9pm, Saturday from 9am – 5pm and Sunday from 9am – 4pm, appointment times for the various specialty services will vary. The hospital is located at 595 Columbian Street in South Weymouth; please visit their website at www.vcasouthshore.com for further information.
