working as a kid," Kent III said, remembering that the company founder worked for Duxbury Coal and Lumber, located where the maritime school now sits. The young man who founded Bayside would be surprised by the sheer size of the business today. On a year-round basis, there are 13 people working there full-time. During the summer, the staff increases to 40 employees. "Unfortunately, a lot of our summer help goes back to college in August," said Kent III, noting that many of the seasonal workers are local college students. When asked when the busy season begins for Bayside Marine, Kent III said "We're in it," explaining that to get their customers' boats ready to hit the water by Memorial Day, the true "busy" season starts in April. Boating season typically wraps up at most area yacht clubs and marinas on Columbus Day weekend, when Bayside's work turns to preparing boats for winter and storing them. Winter and hurricane storage are services Bayside is long recognized for by its customers. If you purchase your boat at Bayside - new or used - the company guarantees you a spot for storage for as long as you own the boat. Hurricane storage is also a guarantee for all Bayside customers, who can simply call the store and have the boat hauled to the storage facility if needed. Besides selling boats from well-known manufacturer Grady- White, Bayside Marine also reconditions and sells used boats and provides repair work of all sorts. Before or after purchase, Bayside offers installation of all kinds of electronic systems for your boat. As a certified installer for Simrad and Lowrance products, Bayside often installs radars, fish finders, auto pilots, thermal scans, side scans and low lights. "We can do installs from the very basic to the very complex," said Kent III. If you are looking to do a refit for a boat you already own, he advises that you book it quickly. "Our installer stays very busy keeping up with the sales department," he said, "so scheduling as soon as possible is highly recommended." 10 441 Washington St, Duxbury www.baysidemarinecorp.com 781.934.2051 Winter services include laying up outboard, water systems and generator for the season and shrink wrapping boats for storage on a trailer, as well as sending the boat south or storage right here at Bayside Marine. Pointing to the parking lot outside Bayside Marine's shop, Kent III noted that about 350 boats are stored on the property every year. "Many of the spots that are occupied by cars during the summer will be used for boats during the winter. The lot looks completely different from season to season." Bayside Marine also handles mooring maintenance for customers and has a steel barge and hydraulic crane to do the work. For those looking for the simplest, easiest way to enjoy their boat with minimal prep work required, Bayside offers an in/out service that gives customers the opportunity to jump into the boat on the dock, and even offers a fuel-service. "It's like a valet service on the water," said Kent III. After docking your boat, Bayside offers a summer shuttle service to get you where you need. The shuttle runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and then on weekends until Columbus Day. The fully-stocked Marine Store is open from 8am-6pm, 7 days a week throughout the summer. With the third generation of Kents leading the way, Bayside Marine has been an active part of the boating community and the South Shore for over 65 years. Just as he hustled away to answer a customer's questions at the Marine Store, Kent III said that "It's a great thing to have a job that you love!"
