8 The year was 1949, when a young Jack Kent of Duxbury decided to end his commute to Edison in Quincy and build a business close to his family that would also serve toward enjoying his lifelong love of boating. World War II had ended just four years before, and soldiers had returned home and were busy building families. The boom of the 1950s was fast approaching and Bayside Marine was born in Duxbury. Boating and family are both integral to Bayside Marine's long history on the South Shore. With so much of Duxbury's life centered around the water, this quiet beach town dotted with white New England clapboard churches, a seagoing history that dates back to the Pilgrims, a pristine beach and successful seafood businesses such as Island Creek Oysters, it is a fitting home for the Kent's business, which has steadily been regarded as top-notch by both customers and manufacturers for its superior sales and service. In 2015, the company received both the Admiral's Circle award for excellence in sales and service, as well as the Grady- White Gold Anchor Dealer award. "We strive to provide the best service possible to make it easy for people to have fun out on the water with their families," said third-generation owner, Jack Kent III, as he worked in the Marine store that Bayside operates on its site. "We are proud to be recognized for the work we love." Each one of the three generations of Kents at the helm of Bayside Marine has raised by Mary McKenzie, photography by Susan Hagstrom
