Montilio's Baking Company is one of the most well-known and respected bakeries in the Boston area. Despite being unbelievably busy with four retail stores and a network of delivery vans that brings fresh, baked goods to the Greater Boston area and Cape Cod, Montilio's continues to make all of its cakes customized to their clients' orders and by hand. "We don't use machinery," says owner, George Montilio. "There are no mass cakes. People make every detail that goes into the cake; there are people who bake it, people who set it up and people who create the decorations." This pride and attention to detail has kept Montilio's a premiere, in-demand bakery for over 70 years. Its Braintree, Weymouth and Quincy locations also serve Montilio's own delicious, wood-fired pizza. For George, a specialty bakery and pizzeria is a natural combination. "My grandfather opened Montilio's as a chicken and pizza shop in Quincy in 1947. Then, my father went to New York to learn the baking trade and opened up a bakery in the shop's basement. They were selling pizza and cake, and we're back again with pizza and cake!" Now, Montilio's is taking its pizza on the road with a gorgeous mobile pizza oven. George special-ordered a gleaming copper pizza oven from Italy. Set atop an antique wagon, this stunning mobile restaurant is at your service. "We bring pizza, salad and baked goods right to you," says George. "You custom-build the menu, choosing between four and eight kinds of pizza, depending on the size of the event." As usual, Montilio's has thought of everything. They also bring the table and chairs so that you don't have to stand around awkwardly, balancing drinks and a paper plate. The pizza wagon can serve up to 200 people and is perfect for graduations, block parties, weddings, birthdays and countless other events. This isn't Montilio's first food truck. With his keen eye for trends, George saw that food trucks were big in the Boston's lunch scene, and also the new "must-have" event item. He custom-outfitted a truck with bakery showcases and created Montilio's "Italian Pastries On the Go." Serving baked goods, espresso and iced coffee, this truck brings a taste of the North End to your special occasion. It also serves large events like Spindles Car Show, Irish Fest Boston and The Marshfield Fair. "Food trucks are big because people want theme-events tailored to their personalities," says George's daughter, Elissa. "These days, people want their celebrations to show who they are." Elissa entered the family business with a marketing background that included running campaigns for the State Treasurer. She recently moved into the wedding department, where she sees this desire for distinctiveness reflected in Montilio's wedding cake orders. "Weddings for this generation are more unique," Elissa says. 8
