In return, Brewster takes care of their team members. In November, they gave pay raises across the board to their EMTs and paramedics—and they paid the highest salaries to begin with. It was a $5 million investment in their people. Brewster also offers stress debriefing and support for team members who have been on difficult calls. Dealing with trauma, illness and death for a living is incredibly stressful, and Brewster recognizes that. Compassion and community are real watchwords for Brewster. They show it time and again with their community services. They perform wellness checks for people who live alone: supervisors or crews go to their homes to make sure the heat works, there's food in the refrigerator, there are no trip hazards, and the like. They work with the Plymouth Fire Department to donate and install air conditioning units for the elderly. They also hand out water to firefighters. "Big hearts that serve" is their motto and it's easy to see why. In addition to their superlative customer service, Mark says the secret to Brewster's success is his father, George: "He is the best this business has ever seen…he's a shrewd businessman, but everyone likes him." One of George's greatest qualities is his generosity: "People he hasn't seen in 20 years will come to him, and he's always there to lend a helping hand. He will give anyone the shirt off his back." George started working in the business at age 14 for his mother Marion. And then, from the time he was a teenager, Mark worked for his father. Now that Mark is an adult himself, he values his father's mentorship on a whole other level. "When you're young," he says, "you don't appreciate it as much as you do when you get older." Family owned, Brewster's legacy and pride shines through everything they do: clinical care, transportation, emergency services, community outreach, and their immense appreciation for their team members. They have a handpicked management team that exemplifies leadership and expertise. By holding onto the values that made them great as far back as 1906, while at the same time constantly pushing to improve not only their standards but the entire industry's standards, Brewster provides Massachusetts and Rhode Island with the highest possible quality emergency medical transport care and service.
