BID-Plymouth has been using this technology since 2013 for partial knee replacements, but this latest advancement in joint replacement surgery transforms the way total knee replacements are performed. Mako Total Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure in which a diseased or damaged joint is replaced with an artificial joint called an implant. Made of metal alloys and high grade plastics, the implant is designed to move much like a healthy human joint. "Mako is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed by providing each patient with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy," said R. Scott Oliver, MD, Chief of Surgery at BID-Plymouth and Orthopedic Surgeon at Plymouth Bay Orthopedics. "We have been using the Mako System to perform partial knee replacements for some time now, and adding this new technology to perform total knee replacements keeps BID-Plymouth on the forefront and provides the community with outstanding healthcare." 3D Mammography Improves Breast Cancer Detection BID-Plymouth's Breast Center offers 3D mammography with its advanced breast tomosynthesis, or 3D technology. Compared to 2D or digital mammography, 3D exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, while the needs of its community. Today, it is a 164-bed hospital, with all of the beds in private rooms. MEDICAL PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS When Seconds Count - Regional Provider for Cardiac Care This year, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health approved BID-Plymouth for non-emergent cardiac catheterization/stent procedures for those suffering from serious heart disease. This is in addition to their previously-approved emergency cardiac catheterization and stent procedures. Now, world-renowned interventional cardiologists from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center work in Plymouth and provide full diagnostic, emergency and non-emergent cardiac catheterization and stent implantation at the hospital. Those suffering from a heart attack that are in need of an emergency or outpatient stent no longer need to travel out of the area. This is a major milestone for BID-Plymouth and the region.
