9 TheSouthShoreMagazine.com decreasing the number the number of women asked to return for additional testing. BID-Plymouth is dedicated to the fight against breast cancer and, in offering the 3D exams, they provide a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening. "From the beginning, the Breast Center has been committed to providing exceptional care to women on the South Shore and Cape Cod and we are so excited to continue to do so by offering 3D mammography," says radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging, Colleen Fine, MD. A 3D exam includes both 2D images and 3D scans. During the 3D portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A 3D exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam. THE BIRTHPLACE – Growth Leads to Expansion To meet the growing need for maternity services, BID-Plymouth is expanding the BirthPlace by adding six postpartum suites, a nurses' station and a new family waiting room. Each new, private patient room will include a hospital bed—more comfortable than a birthing bed—and sleeping accommodations for the Dr. Colleen Fine (left) and Nurse Navigator Cat Melendy from BID-Plymouth's Breast Center.
