25 TheSouthShoreMagazine.com In addition to continued support throughout the year, Adam connects families with other resources and service providers they may need outside of school. Adam's hands-on approach ensures each family always feels supported, even helping them learn to advocate for themselves. Your child's needs are important. If they are struggling, you need someone you can trust who understands all angles of the process to guide you. There are many accommodations that your child may be entitled to that would otherwise be overlooked without an advocate looking out for their best interests. In many instances, children do not receive the services they need simply because a school district may not offer them, or because what the student requires is not common practice for the district. "Public school climates can be challenging. Many times, what school districts offer is presented to the parent as the be all and end all and, typically, that is not the case. There are many factors that dictate services and parents should not be in the dark with regard to their legal rights in this process," says Adam. South Shore Special Education services is a private organization that will provide an individualized approach when advocating for your child, also providing skills coaching, transition services and other special education consulting. Adam helps families understand what services their child is entitled to by law and will help navigate the process of reviewing the proposed IEP. For many parents and guardians, this process can be overwhelming. Unknown terminology and ambiguous information can confuse the process and result in deficits to the plan. Adam helps empower the family by ensuring they understand each facet of the IEP. "I do what I do to help kids and families navigate these obstacles and ensure they do not get taken advantage of by school districts," explains Adam. "Parents often have no way of knowing if what is being offered is appropriate -- or enough -- to help their child succeed. They just have to trust whatever the school district says and that is where my expertise comes in: I can ensure all needs are being addressed and worked on appropriately." Adam's experience working closely with students across several school districts makes him uniquely qualified to notice and address any shortcomings in a child's IEP. He has extensive knowledge and understanding of state laws and rights protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Adam will help families understand these rights and ensure the school district follows through with their responsibilities to the child. In addition to the IEP process, Adam also works with the family for the duration of the school year. He helps address feedback from teachers by working with the family to provide responses that will get positive results and utilizing his day-to-day teaching experience to work directly with the students to overcome challenges. "A big part of what I do involves parent coaching --- really helping those parents who are feeling overwhelmed," Adam explains. "My clients always know I am just a call or text away if they have any question about their child or services."
