30 Several years ago a new community organization emerged on the South Shore, dedicated to promoting the use, enjoyment, and stewardship of Hingham's harbor, waterfront and waterways. The Friends of Hingham Harbor, which is the brainchild of Hingham resident Amy Cowan, has helped bring life back to one of the town's most valuable assets through community programs, like its annual Touch a Boat event that takes place at the end of each May, and popular recreation programs like Zumba on the beach and kite building for the kids. Now in it's fourth year, the Friends of Hingham Harbor has further ramped up its efforts by securing 501c3 status, launching annual membership programs, and establishing a new board of directors comprised of prominent and engaged individuals that reflect the diversity of those that use Hingham's waterways. "It was originally my goal as a parent, to energize others to simply use our great beach that's just steps from town," stated Cowan, "I envisioned families listening to live music, kids on the water and having fun at a playground, and others simply taking in the beautiful scenery and relaxing. We've accomplished a lot in just a few short years and are eager to continue working with the Town and other local organizations to further promote and activate our waterfront." As part of these efforts, the Friends of Hingham Harbor has teamed up with the National Park Service, Department of Conservation and Recreation, Old Colony Running Events and the Boston Harbor Island Alliance to launch a new and unique 5K on Peddocks Island this September 12th. Peddocks, the largest of the Boston Harbor Islands, is home to historic Fort Andrews, a WWI era military base that at its peak housed over 3,000 troops that served in harbor defense. Most people recognize it today by its seaside white chapel that was recently restored and its colorful seasonal cottages. For those who love the outdoors though, Peddocks is simply Shangri-La, with camping being its most popular activity. There are roughly a dozen rustic campsites that offer the perfect place to pitch your tent, or if you're lucky enough to get one, one of the outfitted and comfortable yurts (soft-sided cabins, with a skylight, built in bunks and dining table. The once busy military paths, fortifications and lookouts now offer some of the best trails and views that you can find anywhere in the Commonwealth and for nature lovers, the diversity of plants and wildlife will keep you in awe. The Friends of Hingham Harbor, Harbor Dash 5K, will wind runners passed historic barracks and through tree-lined trails with amazing views of the harbor and city skyline. Special ferry service from the Hingham Shipyard will whisk participants to and from Peddocks, offering the perfect venue to stretch before the run and cool down on the way home. For those that don't want the day to end, which will likely be most, an after-party is planned on the Hingham Shipyard lawn overlooking the marina with live-music, food, drink and fun. The Harbor Dash is first and foremost a family event and supports the Friends of Hingham Harbor's mission to inspire people to get outdoors and engaged with their waterfront recreational opportunities. Proceeds from event sponsorship and registration will be used this year towards the establishment of a new scholarship program for graduating high-school age students interested in conservation, marine sciences, environmental studies, and maritime operations.
