Old Colony Running Events is pleased to announce the creation of a unique road race series in the Hingham Area beginning in August and ending in October. It will include four races in some of Hingham's special places. Each of the events will benefit an open space or community based organization which contribute to making Hingham a great place to live or visit. It's called The South Shore Race Series and each event will take advantage of the beauty of the host location without creating a negative impact. For this reason participation will be limited to maintain a high quality experience. Some of the aspects that make the series unusual are already occurring around town. An illustrated map of the town was painted by local artist Robin Hartley who is known for her murals, including the one of Boston Harbor at the The Inn at Bay Pointe in Quincy. The map includes many of Hingham's points of interest, landmarks and the locations of the races. The logos of the sponsors will be added along the borders of the map and it will be printed on T-shirts that will be provided to runners. The race organizers are currently seeking sponsors from the local business community so don't wait if you want to get on the map. A map unveiling ceremony was recently held at The Snug to kick off the excitement. Heavy Seas Brewing Company created a special brew was named Harbor Dash IPA which was served at a keg tapping celebration for fans and volunteers of the series. The series begins with The End of Summer Classic five miler on Friday evening, August 28th at Bare Cove Park. This local favorite to benefit The Friends of Bare Cove Park has been occurring since 2007 and was recently voted the best five mile race in the area by South Shore Road Race Guide. In addition to the great race course the event is known for the amenities provided which change from year to year but always involve food and music. This year Raffael's at South Shore Country Club will host a post- race celebration in the large pavilion tent for runners, volunteers and sponsors. 31 TheSouthShoreMagazine.com Up next, on September 12th is The Harbor Dash, a 5K run on Peddocks Island, at the entrance to Hingham Bay. It is being hosted by The Friends of Hingham Harbor with help from The Massachusetts DCR, The Boston Harbor Islands Alliance and the National Park Service. Ferries will depart from the Hingham Shipyard Complex. Peddocks has recently undergone an amazing restoration and the race will be the first large event to occur on the island. A post race celebration will be hosted by Paul Wahlberg on the lawn in front of Alma Nove Restaurant. You don't want to miss it. The third event will be The Road to World's End on Thursday evening, September 17th. World's End is perhaps the most picturesque property on the South Shore and offers amazing views of the harbor and the Weir River from nearly every vantage point. The race, to benefit The Trustees of Reservations, is really a gentrified trail run along the unpaved carriage paths which criss cross the property. Because of the intention to create a serene atmosphere for this event, registration is limited to 125 runners with those that register for the entire series being given priority. A wine tasting will occur at the wildlife viewing area following the run. The final event in the series is called The Run Thru Time, a 2.5 mile run at the Hingham Cemetery on Saturday evening, October 3rd. It will be the most unique running event on the South Shore this year and one of only a few to occur in a cemetery anywhere in the country. The theme will focus on the many beautiful aspects of the property, the fall foliage, and the four hundred year history since it opened. The property is a hidden gem tucked in behind the Old Ship Church. It is the only garden cemetery on the South Shore and is well known for its white marble statue of the "weeping angel." It also is the resting place of some of America's early leaders including two Massachusetts Governors, a Secretary of the Navy and some of President Abe Lincoln's relatives. A post race celebration will be held in the newly restored Ames Chapel. There is no other series like it and we believe it will be a great success.
